TRREB has responded to the provincial consultation on regulations to support Bill 2, Protect Ontario Through Canada Free Trade Act, 2025. This new law will guide the removal of interprovincial trade barriers and impact the real estate services sector.
There is a national consensus among all provinces and the federal government to accelerate this initiative. The Ontario Legislature has approved the legislation and will allow an “As-of-Right” model and service standards for certified workers from other Canadian jurisdictions, including real estate professionals.
Consumer protection is the core principle guiding TRREB’s feedback. Consumers deserve the assurance that their real estate professional is qualified, accountable, and operates under the highest professional standards, regardless of where the professional is initially registered.
Where Does TRREB Stand?
TRREB supports the province’s efforts to reduce interprovincial trade barriers and enhance workforce mobility. However, the governing regulation should mandate specific requirements that protect consumers and the integrity of Ontario’s real estate market.
The areas addressed in TRREB’s feedback to the province include:
- Accountability and enforcement
- Knowledge of Ontario Law (TRESA)
- Trust accounts and financial protections
- Mandatory insurance coverage
- Regulatory harmonization vs local adaptation
TRREB will continue to work with the province, RECO, and OREA on implementing a model that balances workplace flexibility with consumer trust and regulatory oversight.
